                        MILIEU CONTROL

            Boston Church of Christ (Crossroads):

An individual may be met at his door by a member of the Movement,
taken from one class to another, to lunch, to afternoon
activities, to evening activities and back home (Multiplying
Ministries Movement, Memorial Church of Christ, Houston, Texas,
1988, pp. 1-2).

                        est/The Forum:

The concept of keeping agreements is used to persuade people to
stay. One elderly woman said that if the doors hadn’t been locked
and she hadn’t made an agreement, she would have left (The
Frightening World of est, John Weldon, 1976).

                      Jehovah’s Witnesses:

“Hence, it is out of wisdom and respect for God’s counsel that
Jehovah’s Witnesses do not make a practice of exchanging valuable
Bible study aids containing scriptural truth for religious
literature that disseminate error or apostate views” (Watchtower,
May 1, 1984, p. 31).

                    COG/FOL Children of God:

Deciding to leave the Children of God brings enormous emotional
pressure. “There are no neutrals: þ The neutral is a liar and a
hypocrite! There are only martyrs or traitors! Which are you?”
(There Are No Neutrals, ML þ F, March 8, 1970, p. 5).

            Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT):

The manual outlines when to bathe, change their underwear, how
hair should be cut, what color clothing should be worn each day
of the week (Church Universal and Triumphant, A Way of Life: Code
and Conduct for Students of Summit University, Summit University
Press, 1975, pp. 11-15).

                      MYSTICAL MANIPULATION

            Boston Church of Christ (Crossroads):

Bible talks are planned around the visitors people are bringing.
It is planned to meet their specific needs so that it seems like
“God wanted me to be here tonight” (Multiplying Ministries
Movement, Memorial Church of Christ, 1988, p. 2).

                        est/The Forum:

“We’ve been conditioned to look for answers outside ourselves þ
But that’s not what people get from us. What they get is an
experience of enlightenment” (New Times, 18 October 1974).

                      Jehovah’s Witnesses:

“This is not giving any credit to the magazine’s publishers, but
is due to the great Author of the Bible. He it is that makes
possible the material that is published in the columns of this
magazine” (The Watchtower, 14 April 1943, p. 127).

                    COG/FOL Children of God:

“If there’s a choice between your reading the Bible I want to
tell you, you had better read what God said today in preference
to what He said 2,000 or 4,000 years ago” (Old Bottles, ML 242,
pars. 12 and 42).

            Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT):

Her followers adore her (Elizabeth Clare Prophet) as an
incarnation of Mother God and is regarded as the only official
Messenger  of the Ascended Masters on the earth today (Church
Universal and Triumphant, Christian Research Institute Fact
Sheet, 1979).

                        DEMAND FOR PURITY

            Boston Church of Christ (Crossroads):

A person’s spiritual condition is used as leverage to produce
guilt. It is commonplace for people to be told things like taking
a second helping of salad indicates ‘greed’ in their lives
(Multiplying Ministries Movement, Memorial Church of Christ,
Houston, Texas, 1988, p. 2).

                        est/The Forum:

“Once you know that you’re totally all right (and you can call
that God, or anything else you want to call it), you can
encompass anything within your alrightness” (The New Cults,
Walter Martin, Vision House, 1980, p. 136).

                      Jehovah’s Witnesses:

“Additionally, the ones who are resurrected to earthly life and
who prove their integrity to God through the millennium and the
final test to follow will be recognized by God as being righteous
and so will be given everlasting life (Revelation 20:5, 7-10)”
(The Watchtower, 15 October 1967, p. 639).

                    COG/FOL Children of God:

“The discipline of Jesus’ revolutionaries must be absolute
obedience to them that have the rule over themþ Whatsoever thy
hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might’ þ duties, study,
witnessing, sharing, prayer, praising, sacrificing, accepting
joyfully suffering, persecution, and even martyrdom!” (The
Revolutionary Rules, ML þ S, March 1972, p. 2).

            Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT):

In a process called `mastery,’ a disciple enters a spiritual
gateway which leads him onto a path to total mergence with God.
(Church Universal and Triumphant, Spiritual Counterfeits Project
Newsletter, December – January 1977).

                        CULT CONFESSION

            Boston Church of Christ (Crossroads):

You are to tell and confess your sins, bad attitudes and other
problems to your Discipleship Partner who will tell you how to
improve your life (Multiplying Ministries Movement, Memorial
Church of Christ, 1988, p. 2).

                        est/The Forum:

                      Jehovah’s Witnesses:

“If the individual does not admit the wrong nature or see the
need to repent, they may have to present `convincing evidence
concerning his sin and concerning his righteousness'” (The
Watchtower, 1 September 1981, p. 23).

                    COG/FOL Children of God:

“This necessary step has one qualification: that you confess your
faults to all of those who know about it, your failure to respect
leadership and to honor your spiritual father and follow his
commands” (Correction of Leadership, ML 38, January 11, 1971, p.
6).

            Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT):

                        SACRED SCIENCE

            Boston Church of Christ (Crossroads):

“Those who persist in asking questions such as `Why?’ or `What is
going on?’ or `What do you really mean?’ are exhorted to get rid
of the pride and other sin in their lives.” (Multiplying
Ministries Movement, Memorial Church of Christ, 1988, p. 2).

                        est/The Forum:

Teaches that you are your own God, and that everything you
experience (even bad things like assault) is a product of your
own divine creative will (Handbook of Today’s Religions, Here’s
Life Publishers, Inc., 1983, p. 92).

                      Jehovah’s Witnesses:

“If we get to thinking that we know better than the organization,
we should ask ourselves: `Where did we learn Bible truth in the
first place? Would we know the way of the truth if it had not
been for guidance from the organization?'” (The Watch-tower, 15
January 1983, p. 27).

                    COG/FOL Children of God:

“I will take those inspired and supernaturally and divinely
inspired letters and put them on the same level as the rest of
the Word of God” (More Precious Pearls, p. 4).

            Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT):

“The stated purpose of the organization is to `publish the
teachings of the Ascended Masters, to shed light on the lost or
distorted teachings of Christ, and to provide humanityþwith the
knowledge of cosmic law” (The New Cults, Walter Martin, Vision
House Publishers, 1980, p. 216).

                      LOADING THE LANGUAGE

            Boston Church of Christ (Crossroads):

“Multiplying Ministries redefines certain words to have meanings
other than Christian churches or even the mainstream Churches of
Christ would define them or be able to relate to them”
(Multiplying Ministries Compared to Lifton’s Criteria for Thought
Reform, Carol Giambalvo, February 1988, p. 21).

                        est/The Forum:

“`I am here to explain what can’t be explained,’ said Erhard at
the `special guest seminar.’ `The goal of the training is
‘getting it,’ but you don’t ‘get it’ in the training. You get
that you’ve got it in the training” (Newsweek, 17 February 1975,
p. 46).

                      Jehovah’s Witnesses:

“No question about it. We all need help to understand the Bible,
and we cannot find the scriptural guidance we need outside the
`faithful and discreet slave’ organization” (The Watchtower, 15
February 1981, p. 19).

                    COG/FOL Children of God:

“If you are going into a Flirty Fishing (prostitution) ministry,
I warn you that you had better be ready to trust God for all
things” (The Cost of Flirty Fishing, ML 501, pars. 60-61).

            Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT):

“The cultist’s vocabulary is liberally sprinkled with orthodox
terminology from a variety of faiths, although every religious
word has been redefined in harmony with the cult’s own world
view” (The New Cults, Walter Martin, Vision House Publishers,
1980, p. 218).

                      DOCTRINE OVER PERSON

            Boston Church of Christ (Crossroads):

“If you don’t understand something or have a criticism, you’re
told to ‘trust,’ you’ll understand later, you’re just a Baby
Christian.” (Multiplying Ministries Compared to Lifton’s Criteria
for Though Reform, Carol Giambalvo, February 1988, p. 25).

                        est/The Forum:

“When you realize that, then no matter how strongly it may appear
to be otherwise, you know that whatever is happening right now
will turn out all right. Knowing this, you are in a position to
start mastering life” (What’s So, January 1975).

                      Jehovah’s Witnesses:

“We should meekly go along with the Lord’s theocratic
organization and wait for further clarification, rather than balk
at the first mention of a thought unpalatable to us” (The
Watchtower, 1 February 1952, p. 80).

                    COG/FOL Children of God:

Regarding Flirty Fishing (prostitution) David Berg writes, “If
you are strong enough in the Spirit and filled with His love, you
can be trusted with His liberty as a useful tool to help others”
(The Law of Love, ML 302-C, par. 8)

            Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT):

Ex-husband of Elizabeth Clare Prophet, Randall King, alleges that
the CUT uses devious tactics to get people’s money. “…you
wanted to get them decreeing, which was the programming
technique” (New Age Cults and Religions, Living Truth Publishers,
1990, p. 173).

                    DISPENSING OF EXISTENCE

            Boston Church of Christ (Crossroads):

“People are in your life to convert þ they are not Christian
unless they are part of us and if you cannot convert them, your
time is better spent with those willing to convert/listen”
(Multiplying Ministries Compared to Lifton’s Criteria for Thought
Reform, Carol Giambalvo, February 1988, p. 27).

                        est/The Forum:

“In est, every system of meaning imposed by outside sources þ
parents, school, church and even Werner Erhard þ is shown up as
illusion” (Newsweek, 6 September 1976, p. 58).

                      Jehovah’s Witness:

“At times action must be taken by a judicial committee of a
congregation against a person in the congregation. Although that
person may be a close friend or relative, do not resist Jehovah’s
arrangement by taking sides with that one against the
organization” (The Watchtower, 15 July 1965, p. 435).

                    COG/FOL Children of God:

“It is more important that we manage to survive and exist out
here as a society, as a church, as a religious movement, with a
new idea, that we manage to survive and just exist, if nothing
else, totally independent of the system, condemning it, damning
it, and saying to hell with it” (Not A Sermon But A Sample, J,
July 3, 1970, p. 7).

            Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT):

“At one point a local newspaper discovered and printed a hit list
that included the names of almost 200 people against which the
cult members pray daily, calling for the will of God to cleanse
all opposition” (Larson’s New Book of Cults, Tyndale House
Publishers, 1982, p. 182).
